Canon HF10 AVCHD Indoor Sample

18 11 2008
This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series HD For Schools

Here’s some video shot at the Huntington Museum of Art here in town. Most of the video was shot with a Canon HF10 AVCHD camera, but a couple of clips use the Sony HC1 HDV camcorder. Both units are considered high-end consumer cameras, and neither of them do well in the low light of a museum. The shots of the plants in the Museum Conservatory turned out very well.

The video also makes extensive use of my new Glidetrack accessory. The Glidetrack attaches to the top of a tripod for dolly shots. I think it adds greatly to the professionalism of some of the shots and is the best accessory I’ve purchased for a camcorder.

Aiptek Action HD Sample

12 11 2008
This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series HD For Schools

The next inexpensive camera I’ve tested is the Aiptek Action HD. Unlike the V1073, the Aiptek is a camcorder first, but it also takes digital stills. The camcorder is available at Wal Mart.

image

This camera has several advantages over the Kodak V1073, as well as one big disadvantage. The Aiptek doesn’t focus hunt as much as the V1073, and the White Balance can be adjusted, which is a good thing because the Auto White Balance isn’t that great. The camcorder also has a macro mode for closeups. The fold out screen is difficult to see in bright outdoor light, but certainly more viewable than the Kodak Camera. The menu is controled with a couple of buttons and a joystick, and settings are easier to adjust.

The big disadvantage for me is thast even though the AIptek uses a Quicktime H.264 codec, the files were much harder to work with in Sony Vegas, compared to the Quicktime H.264 files of the Kodak . I ended up rendering each clip as an HDV .m2ts file before editing, which of course doubled my editing time. I’m sure these files would be eaasier to edit on a MAC. Note that the Aiptek and Kodak cameras use low bit-rate H.264 video. Better camcorders from Sanyo and Samsung use migher bit-rate Quicktime H.264, and these cams are receving very good reviews. Unfortunately, I could not test these cameras.

The video below consists of random clips I’ve shot over the last few months. You’ll notice again, that handheld HD looks bad with these cameras, and there are more handheld shots in this sample than with the Kodak sample I poseted earlier this week. If you want to compare video from each cam, the opening shot, the ducks, and Fall tree, were shot at the same time.
